Let’s explore some of the best charter spots and locations you can discover during your sailing trip to Sicily!

Aeolian Islands

Nestled just 15 miles off the northeast coast of Sicily, the Aeolian Islands are a true gem of the Mediterranean.

The archipelago consists of seven islands formed from volcanic eruptions over thousands of years: Lipari, Salina, Stromboli, Vulcano, Panarea, Filicudi, and Alicudi.

Due to their peculiar nature and incredible volcanic activity, the cluster of islands was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 2000.
Each island has a unique character and boasts its own natural beauty and attractions. They are renowned for their breathtaking scenery, picturesque villages, black sand beaches, and crystal-clear waters. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful anchorage or an action-packed adventure, the Aeolian Islands have something for you to enjoy.

If you want to tap into your adventurous spirit, then Stromboli deserves a top seat on your itinerary. The island is home to one of the most active volcanoes in the world, with three impressive craters that erupt daily at regular intervals. These explosive bursts of lava that reach hundreds of feet into the air are so unique that geologists have coined the term “Strombolian” to describe eruptions of a similar style.

One of the best ways to experience the magic of these explosions is by sailing around the island during the night hours. During your cruise, you’ll be able to see the lava flowing from the craters and lighting up the night sky. If you want to get even closer to the spectacle, you can easily hike up the mountain to one of the observation points and watch from above as the lava explodes into fireworks.

For water sports enthusiasts and snorkeling lovers, Filicudi will be a true paradise. Dotted with small coves, the island offers some of the most stunning underwater landscapes in the Mediterranean, with vibrant marine life, unique rock formations, and crystal-clear waters. You can also dive into the Underwater Museum with an authorized guide, which features relics from the island’s past, including sunken ships and ancient artifacts.

Lipari, the largest island, is a hub of activity and has plenty of shops, restaurants, and bars to enjoy.

Salina, known for its lush vegetation and sweet wines, is a peaceful haven perfect if you want to escape the bustle and noise of modern life.

Lastly, Panarea, the smallest of the Aeolian Islands, is the ultimate destination for those seeking a luxurious escape. What sets the island apart is its vibrant nightlife. It is renowned for its chic bars, restaurants, and clubs that cater to celebrities and VIPs and attracts wealthy Italian youth and international visitors. It offers an atmosphere of sophistication and luxury, with a nightlife that caters to upscale clientele. Here, you can enjoy a leisurely dinner at one of the many restaurants while sipping on a perfectly crafted cocktail and then dance the night away at one of the island’s exclusive nightclubs.

Palermo

Palermo is the capital of Sicily, and it’s known for being the most conquered city in history. Steeped in history and culture, the city is influenced by the many civilizations that have ruled it, including the Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans, Normans, Arabs, Germans, and Spaniards. This rich heritage is evident in many aspects of the city, including architecture, art, and food.

When you visit Palermo, you will find a city filled with beautiful historical sites, such as the Norman Palace, the Cathedral of Monreale, and the Palermo Cathedral. The city is also renowned for its vibrant street markets, including the famous outdoor Ballarò Market, where you can sample the best of local Sicilian cuisine and shop for souvenirs or other non-food items.

Sailing around Palermo, you’ll discover stunning bays and coves, secluded beaches, and scenic cliffs. Isola delle Femmine is a golden sand beach that’s unspoiled by touristy crowds, and you can enjoy the serene atmosphere and swim in the translucent waters.

Aegadian Islands

The Aegadian Islands are three miniature, mountainous islands on the northwestern coast of Sicily. They are known for their laid-back and friendly atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and the rugged beauty of their cliffs. Caves that have been around since the prehistoric era can be found scattered around the islands of Levanzo and Favignana. Venturing inside, you’ll discover wall paintings believed to be over 10,000 years old.

If you’re a student of Homer, you may recognize Favignana, the largest of the islands, as it was featured in the Odyssey as the home of Circe. The island is a former tuna-fishing center and home to the Florio delle Tonnare, an impressive tuna-processing plant converted into a modern museum.
